THE FLESHTONES are young inarticulate manic 'suburbans', their frustration set within the framework of a rationale peculiar to this decade, an agreement between THE GRAVEDIGGERS (on VOXX Records) and THE FUZZTONES (on BMG Records) in an unique style. They actually came out in 1976 when New York was polluted with disco and stuff like that; they had the guts to emerge from all this crappy sound and to spell out their music as a mixture of original garage rock of the '60's with a careless, indiscriminate alloy of any of the contemporary styles that seemed to jump and move. Luckily for them, 'Powerstance' is a record that manages to provide the perfect soundtrack for their sheer attitude. Musical excellence and clever garage/rock'n'roll manoeuvres are the best things anyone should expect from THE FLESHTONES so no-one will be disappointed with the crucial follow-up to last year's trailblazing 'Blast-Off!' on ROIR (finally released on vinyl and CD). THE FLESHTONES are patently more exciting, more worthy, more intelligent and more enjoyable than other N.Y. garage/r'n'r bands, one notable development, however, is the sharp increase in self-penned material with chief FLESHTONE, Peter Zaremba (who started singing when he formed the band with Keith Streng - guitar, vocals - in May of 1976), proving that he's more than a well-adjusted 'caveman' (again, the analogy with Mr. Alec Palao from THE STING-RAYS seems ineluctable) with songs such as 'I'm Still Thirsty' and 'I Can Breathe', both showing a fairly standard mix of garage/pub-rock/urbanbilly or whatever this month's name for it is. Having a look at the band's line-up, we have Keith Streng who was a founder member of THE FLESHTONES and worked with Mr. Zaremba in other projects such as THE LOVE DELEGATION, and FULL TIME MEN. Bill Milhizer has worked with THE FLESHTONES since 1980, Ken Fox is another great example of a rockin' man, playing bass with JASON & THE SCORCHERS, and finally Steve Greenfield on sax and Joe Loposky on trumpet. THE FLESHTONES are, indeed, a remarkable band, and 'Powerstance' echoes most with an endless spell! They have the heartening potential to be all things to all people. They are touring Europe at the moment (France, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain)...watch out! They can even rock your place! |
