London, England - Independence Day 1986

I still don't know if I actually like The Fleshtones or not, being very much a band of yesterday and not tomorrow, but this set was nothing short of brilliant, in a purely American; way over the top, sort of way. In fact I've never seen anything like it; pure magnetism, role playing and audience participation, made a King Kurt gig look boring and tame.

Their extremely rusty saxophone, see through guitar and Vox 300 Continental organ are not the only things that make this band truly original, or at least different. The 60's soul routine of 3 steps back, 3 steps forward, on your knees, fall on your back and wiggle your legs might look terribly cliché on a Madonna dance troupe, but these guys were playing their instruments! And I think the 'Anadin Brothers' could use a few lessons from singer Peter Zaremba's - dance steps. In fact give him a pair of white go-go boots and he'd make a perfect go-go girl (tranny of course).

If Mick Jagger was ever compared to a 'wild turkey on acid' in his early days, then this guy must surely be a goldfish out of water on lots of speed.

They covered lots of their later material, and even though they didn't do their gem 'Shadow-Line', their encore more than made up for this. They came back on and literally walked off stage on to the audience, still playing their instruments, mind, to their 'American Beat' and were last seen on the street playing drums... They polished off in a true 'fly by night' fashion - they flew over from New York for this one night and could not have ended on a better 'beat' on this July the 4th Independence Day.
